Is There a Lesson in the E-scooter Ban?

Read: Matthew 5:16 Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

It’s hard to take a neutral stand on what is arguably this week’s biggest news—the ban of e-scooters on footpaths.

For many pedestrians who have had close shaves with personal mobility devices (PMDs) whizzing past at speed—like me—the recent announcement comes as great news. “Finally!” is one reply I’ve heard several times.

But I have to acknowledge that there are many PMD riders out there who are not only using their e-scooters responsibly, but who have also come to depend on them for important things.

There’s the elderly man I know well, who has problem walking due to pain in his feet but who has been able to do his grocery shopping with the help of a PMD. And there’re the well-mannered food delivery riders who have kept to the speed limit diligently.

Unfortunately, these responsible PMD riders will now be affected by a ban brought about by the actions of a small number of inconsiderate, reckless users. It doesn’t seem fair—but, as many would say, that’s life.

Reflecting on this week’s big news, I couldn’t help but think: Could the same thing be happening among Christians?

Could the careless deeds of some believers negate the positive testimonies of the many others who show the world that being a follower of Christ can make a person a better relative, a better neighbour, or a better co-worker? Could the rude or hurtful words or thoughtless actions of some undo the many other kind, loving actions of others?

Instead of quickly pointing our fingers, perhaps we can ask ourselves first: Are we in that first group? Have we lost our cool and lashed out with an unkind word? Have we been unfriendly, inconsiderate, or unhelpful, and as a result, given Christianity a bad name? Have our words and actions made it difficult for others to share about the love of Christ?

Jesus tells us simply: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Our words and deeds can make a difference to what others think of our faith—and our God. All of us will continue to trip up and make mistakes on this continuing journey of transformation into Christlikeness, but let’s “make every effort to add to [our] faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love” (2 Peter 1:5-7).

While it is ultimately the Holy Spirit who will change people’s hearts, we have a part to play in being Jesus’ representatives on earth.—S. C. Lee

Father, help me to be more Christlike in my words and deeds each day, that I will bring glory to You and point people to Your saving grace.
