Few things can bring people together the way sport does. There is something about it that captivates us—sport speaks the universal language of dreams, destiny, perseverance, and of course, victory.

In Australia, sport is a big deal. We love to watch it, play it, talk about it, watch others talk about it…and the list goes on. To say that sport is our nation’s favorite pastime would be quite an understatement. Some people practically breathe sport.

There is much to appreciate about sport: it keeps us fit and encourages a number of healthy values helpful to our society. But here’s something else to consider: what if our devotion to sport and its gifted players is actually an expression of an innate desire to worship someone greater than ourselves?

That is the question Mike Raiter explores in Why We Love Sport So Much, pointing to God who alone is big enough for our worship and can truly satisfy the deepest longings of our hearts.
